Question for y'all. Can a 1 to 1.5 inch bluegill survive the trip through a 6 hp Honda transfer pump with a strainer? Assuming he makes it through the strainer holes I don't know what sort of mechanism drives a transfer pump. For all I know he'll get ground up into pieces. Don't worry--I already have my dunce cap firmly affixed.

Physically, you would think there was no way. The impeller would make things too violent. And yet, it happens. I know a guy that pumps from a creek to maintain his water level. He has more GSF than BG and the creek is wall to wall GSF. How else could it happen?
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Bruce, there is an impeller in there. The blades are widely spaced, and there's a chance that small fish won't get hit. If you pump 100 GSF or BH fry or eggs through there, I bet 5-10 would survive the 400 G's and slashing blades.
I will be pumping from a small gully that has GSF, BH, gambusia, and God knows what else. But I will be filtering the water through a shallow, grassy 800 foot ditch, and a large dam of limestone gravel.

Bruce, I believe that may be how I got carp in my small pond. And these fish had to have been smaller than 1 - 1.5 inches.

What kind of pump is it? I'm not sure what a transfer pump is. A high pressure pump like a fire pump has little holes that would chew up any fish but a trash pump can spit pretty big fish out without chewing them up.

We use 250-300 micron filter socks (aquatic ecosystems)on the discharge end when pumping from the creek or from pond to pond.
