Were working on an 18 acre lakesite that the Drop pipe failed on 3 years ago. The pipe was patched with concrete about 10 years prior to breaking. TCEQ required engineering be done before any work was done. The engineering is completed and we started working on the site a couple of days ago. Here are some pictures. I will keep pictures updated during the project.

Looks to me like another major problem is all the trees on the dam, unless those all grew up in the last 3 years. Trees on dams are bad news.

Agree Bill. I think the trees may be a huge future problem.

The trees are definitely a problem. We highly recommended clearing the entire dam. The lake is owned by several people and only one is footing the bill. Just the repair alone is a small fortune. TCEQ somehow agreed to leave trees on dam due to the dam being there 44 years and removing the trees could possibly cause more problems.

Installed the new overflow today. You never know what all you will dig up.

We completed the job last Monday. I have put all of the pictures on the web album. The project turned out pretty good. We ran into a few unforseen things but nothing major.

Your work looks great!

I cringed though when I saw the pipe was set in sand! Seems to me the engineer is planning a future blowout to work on.

Rainman,

We had one of our dams constructed with a sand antiseep collar as well. The NRCS designed this. Basically a trench was cut in the middle of the core trench perpendicular to the principal spillway tube. The trench extended a foot or two below the spillway tube, and at the bottom of the trench they placed a perforated 6 inch tube that was covered with a fabric material to prevent sand from getting in the tube. In the middle of this 6 inch tube they placed a T, and then ran a solid 6 inch tube just below the principal spillway tube and back out to the back toe of the dam. Then the perpendicular trench was filled with sand up to the top of the principal spillway tube. From there down to the back toe, both tubes were carefully packed with clay. Then above that point clay was also built up to the top elevation.

The theory behind this that any water seeping through the dam along the principal spillway will hit the sand layer, drop down and flow into the 6 inch where it will pass through the dam without eroding any soil.

Basically it's the opposite of the normal antiseep collar method of just blocking the flow of the water.

This dam was built in 93 and we haven't had any problems with it. However we also have several other ponds with rubber antiseep collars and they have worked well too.

We werent crazy about using the stabilized sand around the pipe. What we did but didnt take any pictures of is about 20 ft behing inlet box we did a core of solid hi pi clay about 6 ft thick around the pipe hope to prevent any seeping through the stabilized sand.

In this issue of PB magazine Otto describes using sand and a french drain under the pipe to carry any water away from the pipe that would seep in, or along the pipe.
