Can someone here give me some suggestions for the type of fence that I should get to go around a pond.

I hae a pond and there are some neighboring houses nearby and I would like to put a fence around the pond for piece of mind.

I would like to have about a 6-7ft tall fence maybe topped with bobwire. Most of the field fence that I have seen is not this tall so I am not sure what type of fence I should use. Also, it seems that someone could climb field fence fairly easily if they wanted to. Is there some other type of fence other than chain link that I could use?

I really like the fence that they put beside the interstate but I am not sure what kind of fence that is or where you could even buy it.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Black posts and an electric fence. I think that's the cheapest route material wise.

I agree. We surrounded my grandmother's large yard with black fence and it's very nice and in the wooded areas basically invisible. The deer didn't appreciate it too much.

Scott, do you have a picture of what you're thinking? I would think an electric fence, once realized what it is, would be easier to breach than a taller fence topped with barbed wire.

No pics, but I'll try to paint one.

8' tall "T" posts, 2' into the ground. Rows of horizontal wire every foot starting at the top. Posts and insulators are painted black. There is a 200 mile controller on the market, that will also burn thru weeds if they touch the fence.

I've inclosed a 50' x 75' area with a 3 wire electric fence, and used the smallest controller that I could find (1/4 mile, I believe). Believe me, you didn't want to touch it twice! It'd kill squirrels and blackbirds.

For peace of mind, I wouldn't recommend barbwire. It's barely a deterrent. Mostly it's used for livestock.

What you need is a no-climb steel fence. It'll cost you a pretty penny but it will rarely fail you. Aside from a direct hit from a moving vehicle, they are rigid and mostly impenetrable to the casual bum, poacher, or wanna-be-criminal. You can get ornamental pointy-things for the top of the fence and avoid the liability of razorwire.

I think it was renamed barbed wire for citification.

If you build it, they will come. People are going to be able to get over anything you put up if they want to.

I would suggest getting an attractive fence. Go with a nice dark green or black color job, and post a few warning signs. You might also want to put up some game cameras (flashes taped over) to check for intrusions.

I'd plant some rose bushes beside the fence too, nothing worse then having to go through those thorny devils.

It is pretty common here in Texas to use an 8 foot tall sheep fence with one roll of "bob wahr" (funny, that makes perfect sense to me) on the top. Use 2 3/8" pipe cemented in for your corners and 10 foot T-posts in between. Then place 'posted, no trespassing signs all around it.

That will keep out all the law abiding citizens. Nothing will keep out the others, nothing.

On a more serious note, you could get a predator drone to patrol the area and send recon pictures to your home computer.

A good fence with with some natural razor wire (Firethorn) planted along it might keep trespassers out and provides a visual barrier.
