What ML described is the standard way to reduce LMB crowded ponds. Take out LMB and stock larger BG or forage fish. Timing of the events can be the reason. For example the LMB and tilapia could have been eating all the tilapia and BG fry/small for years and during that time with no recruitment the larger BG over time died out due to age. Don't assume that 6in. BG won't make it. I will get some winter water temps for Fla. It may be that the tilapia spawn most all year. Recall that the LMB spawn that far south can last for for 6 mths.
