Straight out of the northwoods, I went to San Francisco in 1969, via a few months in San Diego. Morning breakfasts in Berkeley. I found the Haight-Ashbury district. I got to see Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Trini Lopez, and others at the Fillmore. I got to see the opening of
Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical and
Oh, Calcutta.
Whoooh! Things sure were way different than they were back on the farm! China Town, Ghridelli Square, Golden Gate Park, North Beach.
Wow. I was nearly 22. I was really naive.
Finnochio's! A young lady (I think) took me there on a date. Who knew? Not me -- until the show was over! That was embarrassing.
I was ready to be a hippy. Scott McKenzie was telling us to "be sure to wear a flower in your hair."
Unfortunately, it was 1969. I wasn't in San Francisco because I chose to be there. Some guy named Richard Nixon sent me a nice letter welcoming me to the US Marine Corps, but I found myself in my Uncle Sam's Navy (not all bad).
They took away all my hair! A Pond Boss terry headband sure would have been nice to have had in those days! It would have been a great place hold that flower.
Peace!
