UNITED STATES Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 21:50 (GMT + 9) Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn signed an agreement Tuesday with China to export up to 30 million pounds of Asian carp a year from the Illinois River. Officiallly, the state is entering into an agreement with Chinese processing firm Beijing Zhuochen and Big River Fisheries to harvest carp from Illinois rivers. Big River will process, package and ship the fish to Zhuochen for resale in international markets where the fish is a delicacy. The move is aimed at reducing the population of the invasive species in downstate Illinois. The deal is "one of the most aggressive efforts to address the Asian carp problem, and is a critical step to long-term economic sustainability and the success of the commercial fishing industry,� Quinn said in a press release. I am glad to see that some people are taking steps to get rid of these.
Has anyone tried to eat one of this carp? I am just curious if they are as boney as the common carp or similar flavor.

This is a great thing! The alternative is expensive repeated poisoning with rotenone and wasted fish. And we can make money rather than waste it!
My only concern is someone may decide clandestine seeding of them in other waters, to produce a commercial fishery could cause them to spread. It may have already been a possibility but when people see dollar signs...

Free enterprise to the rescue! When you see a ton of airborne protein in front of a boat, there must be a market for it somewhere.
Cecil, you have a good point. No doubt some pervert will put his wallet ahead of the ecology and do the Johnny Appleseed thing. I guess we will never be able to eradicate the swimming rats, and will have to learn to live with them.
I would be worried about native fish being netted, or spawning being disturbed while netting Carp.

The Indiana dnr is about to put mesh fencing between a lowland marsh and the Wabash river "to prevent Asian carp from getting into the river during flooding". Seems to me like it will need to be pretty fine mesh In order to be effective.
Do nature a favor, spay/neuter your pets and any weird friends or relatives.
