HYBRID STRIPED BASS STOCKING:

Size of pond: ¼ acre pond:

Year stocked: 01-12-05
Number of HSB stocked: 100 4-6 inches
Approximate size of HSB caught: 8 inches, 05-12-05
Approximate number of HSB removed to eat: None

Any restocking and if so, number, size and years: None to date
(Extreme drought conditions with low and hot 2005 water temps leave HSB survival rates somewhat in question, but moderate feeding observed is optimistic.
BG population to be determined by trapping and HSB by hook and line.)

Size of pond: 2 acre pond

1st Year stocked: 09-26-03
Number of HSB stocked: 100, 4-6 inch
Approximate number of HSB removed to eat: none
Approximate size of HSB removed: none
Survival rate low due to LMB predation.

2nd HSB stocking: 02-10-05
Number of HSB stocked: 15, 8-10 inches
Approximate number of HSB removed to eat: none
Approximate size of HSB removed: none
Good survival rate.

3rd HSB stocking: 11-01-05
Number of HSB stocked 100, 10-12 inches
Approximate number of HSB removed to eat: none
Approximate size of HSB removed: none
Good survival rate assumed.

Any restocking and if so, number, size and years: See above
HSB restocking plans: Plan to stock 25, 10-12 inch HSB each spring and fall until numbers can be established by catch rates.

Will you just let HSB die out? NO

Thank you everyone for your input! As you can see, the people that answered this question are moving from CC to HSB.

With either of these species, we must look forward to how we will restock them. If we stock HSB at 30 per acre and restocked 25% each year, that would be 12 per year. These fish would probably have to be 10-12" and cost about $2 each or $24 per year per acre.

We could probably have 100 CC per acre. If we didn't harvest them, they might live to 10 years. Restocking would be 10 per year, again 10-12 inches long at about $2 each or $20 per year.

In our 4-acre lake, I am restocking 50 SMB per year. These are 10-12" and cost $5 each or $250 per year. This would be about $62.50 per acre. This is the most expensive species we restock.

If we have large catch and release mortality, we will have to restock more fish. The use of circle hooks has reduced our mortality greatly.

When we use these species in our lake, we have to plan on restocking. This means going to a fish supplier and saying that we want so many of a particular size. Hopefully these posts will give everyone some idea of what to expect.

Good job Norm. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. It should be helpful for reference and for those using your stocking philosophies. More information may be added as this forum matures and more experience of pond owners is obtained.
