Last night I sprayed half of my pond with Cutrine Plus... My wife just called me at work and found one of my nice bass dead, and I am assuming it is because of spraying. It was calm out and I only did one half.

I am hoping the windmill running today non stop with wind will help save my butt.

I am wondering if anyone has any experience using Green Clean products? I am starting to think that might be the way to go in cleaning the pond and being preventive before algea takes off (like in this case).

Am I correct in the assumption that this stuff won't cause my fish to die off because it puts oxygen in as it kills the algea cells. I just have no experience with it, and I don't want to kill my fish every darn time I spray - I didn't expect this.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Hopefully there will only be that one. I'm actually getting ready to spray some cutrine plus in my pond this afternoon, though I'll now probably treat less than half just to be on the ultra safe side. I've been hearing about Green Clean and am also very interested to try some and see what it can do. Not sure if any of our vendors here carry it or not, but hopefully if they do, they'll jump in and advise.

One dead bass does not necessarily implicate the Cutrine Plus. It may have been a coincidence. Usually if you have a chemical overdoze you will see more than one dead fish. Was it a large older fish perhaps? What kind of condition was it in as in relative weight?

I lose single fish from time to time in my ponds and it's not attributable to anything in particular. In fact I don't even get concerned about it.

I bought a tub of the regular Green Clean for about $128.00 and I feel it was a waste of hard earned money. Not much chemical for the price and it wasn't that effective. That said Cutrine Plus is not that effective in my ponds either, apparently due to my very hard water. Word on the street is if you use Green Clean use the stronger grade.

That seems a bit quick for oxygen depletion. However larger fish are the first to be affected by it. Here's a good article from Virginia Tech:

Cecil, what's the active ingredient of the Green Clean that you have? Nate recommended a different product, and I was able to pick it up yesterday. I haven't put it in the pond yet.

I too would be interested in products which work but are not necessarily harmful. I guess I want to try to be greener in managing my pond.

Has anyone tried barley straw with any success? I have had several people recommend using that as a preventive measure.

Any product that kills plants has to reduce DO's to some extent. Its the plants and wind/wave action that puts O2 into the water.
