How is your wrist after throwing those for 4-5 hours? I have noticed a trend towards those large blade baits for musky. Do you prefer a short rod or long rod for tossing them?
It's surprisingly easy to do this for a long period. If I burned over shallow weeds constantly I would get sore, but I'm always mixing it up by running at different depths and speeds, switching lures, using topwaters, etc.
I use a 7'9" heavy, fast action rod paired with an Abu-Garcia 5501c3 reel. A long rod helps throw the bait a good distance, but almost more importantly allows the fisherman to make a nice figure-8 at the end to catch any following Musky.
These bucktails are small compared to some of the ones a lot of guys throw. 12 inch, 3 ounce, bucktails with twin #10 colorado blades are common for a lot of the people fishing in Minnesota. Lures like that require a pretty serious reel (Daiwa Saltist or such), running them with most reels wears gears out after a season. Many fishermen also use 8-9 foot rods.
