Some of you may have seen this in the Traveling Lure thread:

They were ill prepared. They said it could be a flying squirrel, a bat, or something far more insidious. Todd suggested it could be a killer rat. They wanted to poison it. I said no -- it would smell too bad when it died. This was on the side of The Mansion where the peak is about 30 feet off the ground, and that is where the critter is living. They didn't bring a ladder. Besides, I think they were afraid.

I sent the exterminators packing. But, before they left, they got to talking about pond fishing. Quick thinking Todd tells them we are Pond Boss Ambassadors. He suggests I give them some Pond Boss brochures, which I did. I was wearing my Pond Boss cap. We started talking about the Traveling Lures, including the Broke Back Rapala. They left in a big hurry for their next appointment. They again looked afraid.

Well, the exterminators were back yesterday. The main exterminator dude brought an older and wiser gentleman with him. I guess that was in case the problem was like Todd may have suggested -- a KILLER RAT in the ceiling.

It turns out that our master bedroom cathedral ceiling had become a bat cave! mad The exterminators got as many bats out from the outside (with a bent coat hanger), as they could. Then, where the bats were getting in, they sealed with foam, . The remaining bats had to exit through the interior of our house! cry

As of 11:30 last night I had removed about 22 bats -- many while we were trying to watch "Sherlock Holmes" with Robert Downey, Jr. It sure in nice to be able to put a DVD on hold while you evict unwelcome guests.

I'm also sure glad to have a wonderful wife who isn't afraid of most critters.

Sheesh, Ken! Glad you got it figured out and dealt with!

One word of caution, you may want to have someone inspect the space, if it's possible somehow, to verify you don't have a bunch of bat poop up there. When it dries up, it can turn to a very fine powder that may make its way into your living space. When breathed, it can lead to some very serious health issues. Also, as I posted once some time ago in another thread, bat poop is so full of bacteria and nasty living organisms that, unlike dog poop which is stationary (thank goodness!), it moves! Once again, my profession has helped me to learn something that is otherwise utterly useless! Represented a family once that bought a house infested with literally about a ton of bat poop. Pretty much everyone developed respiratory problems as a result. So, my point is PLEASE make sure you guys are not exposed to anything bad now that the bats are gone!

Wow Todd! We may put you on a lifetime retainer!

We know the bats were there for two or three months. For those who haven't seen my home, we live in a log home. The top has one large long 8x10 inch beam across the peak of the roof. The bats were between the top of the beam and the metal roofing. Somehow, after we sealed their entrance, they found a way into the house. There is no practical way for someone to get in there, short of ripping the metal roofing off the house. So, I guess I will now go up there and caulk and seal everything in that area so that it is essentially air tight on the inside of the house.

Thanks Todd.

I like it!

I haven't had bats yet but I do have a couple of Starlings that nested between the top of my fireplace and the facia board. Boy are they messy!

I'm starting to regret my decision to build a log home. I have a couple of log sections that have partially rotted somehow, and it's once again time to get the ladders out and powerwash and restain. Seems the stain only lasts about 4 years max regardless of the quality.

At least you have a metal roof. I have singles and have replaced three in the last two years.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Ken, I hope you got them all out and don't have anymore issues. Nothing more fun than chasing bats around a house!

Those exterminators could have made your life a lot easier. If they identified the entrance that the bats were using they could have easily put a one-way door over it to allow the bats to exit the house but not reenter. There's a pretty good write up on it on page 8 (and the rest of the handbook is pretty good for other bat info) at http://pubs.cas.psu.edu/FreePubs/pdfs/uh081.pdf.

Glad you got the bats out, though.
