I have a test hole that is 2 1/2 good clay & then I began to get into some gravel.The clay that is mixed w/ this gravel is good....stains my hand brown when I sqeez it...stays together when balled up.I had one contractor say it would be ok nto use on the back side of the dam & another contractor says he is not interested in diggin the dam.I have enough clay to dig the dam.When i was diggin in the clay/gravel mix the excavator struggled to dig b/c it was hardto dig.Anyone have any suggestions.If gravel is such a bad thing why are all these gravel pits that i have been fishin keep me commin back??????

Good Question. I hit gravel at 14 feet in my pond.I have not noticed any problems. Making a dam out of it may be another issue. I'm awaiting the answer.

Gravel is porous and doesn't hold water. Dan, you may have hit a small seam.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Thanks Dave. We have some gravel pits around here that seem always full. Maybe they hit water when dug?

i am in ahigh water table...since i hit gravel does this mean i could pos. be hitting springs that would feed my pond

That depends. Is there water running out of the gravel now? The bad thing about Springs is that they flow both ways, depending on which end has more water pressure.

Dan and Grant, gravel and other pits are usually not singles. If you drain one, you will USUALLY drop the water level in others. The one being drained can seldom be drained just once. That is the concept of the aquifer and goes for sand, gravel and other rocky formations.
