Out all night partying
This little guy must have been out too late partying. Still sleeping at 2pm, but I guess he has no choice since he got caught on the fence.
No worries, we managed to free him and keep him in a safe place until it got dark. Just checked and I don't see him in the tree anymore.

nice job on the good deed. Sort of along the same lines, when I was about 13 plowing a field on the tractor I spotted three snakes hanging on a barbed wire fence dead. My dad says the hawks hank snakes on the fence to dry and come back and get them, almost like cooking! Sorry just wanted to share.
Bats are cool creatures.
Get out and fish.

He wasn't happy at all while being unhooked. I would feel real sorry for someone who attempted to grab one bare handed. They look real cute but have loads of teeth.
I hear you jakeb, it is very common to see snakes, lizards, fish, rodents and all sorts of bugs stuck on the barbs. You can imagine my surprise while I was walking toward it trying to figure out what was hung on the fence.

Shrikes are very cool. One of my favorite birds to read about when I was a kid.

We had a bat stuck on barb wire at work just like that about a year ago. I got him loose wearing welding gloves.
Does the name Pavlov ring a bell?

Shrikes are neat birds, I have never seen a northern shrike as they are mostly a northern bird. I have seen loggerhead shrikes though which have a more southern range.

I bet there's a higher probability that a bat perching on a fence is rabid. A bat that got stuck on a fence is probably fine, just a little embarrassed.
I've seen loggerhead shrikes taking out those brown European sparrows. They're vicious little predators.
