Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Types of fish to choose KOI

I have a chance to get as many free KOI as I want.

I hear they eat FA? I could use something that eats FA.

I'm just wondering if they will be ok in a pond where I plan to stock SMB, YP, PS, & WE?

Koi feed on FA thats right.
In a koi pond they would do a job feeding on FA mainly because thats all the natural food available, allmost a sterile envirnoment,black liner some ornamental rocks, and maybe a few plants in a bascet to make the pond look "natural".
Common carp wich is the fater off all KOI is what you have to look at will this fit your purpose or be able to live in a balance with the rest off your stock, and how will it inflict on the plant environement in your pond as a hole.
Last you have to take in to acount the collor, KOI have lost their natural camoflage so they are easy prey for intruders and the ponds other inhabitants, you might have to restock continuasly?
I'm not familiar with your other species of choise in mathc with common carp or koi, but have in mind the carps preferance to bootom feeding and the digging in the soil wich can(will) have a inpact on the total habitat balance.

andedammen is correct in that Koi will eat FA, and he's also correct that they will eat it as a last resort. In a Koi pond, there typically isn't a dirt bottom, so they cannot root in the pond bottom for invertebrates, etc.

Personally I would not put Koi or Carp in my pond, I'd rather adjust the amount of light penetration in the water via fertilization and photoplankton bloom vs. stirred up sediment from bottom feeding carp.
