In our little pond just over 1.5 acres, we are now easily catching 4-5 of these sized GSF in a 30 minute window.

Hi Clayton - nice photos! I'm sure the GSF Federation will be elated to see these pics - expect a visit from them soon. Be on the watch for a black Surburban with very dark tinted windows....

Yes you can have that many good looking GSF. I have quite a few in the 8 inch plus range. I caught one last weekend that was a good 10 inches. Just remember to watch your numbers if you have another predator fish in the pond like LMB. As it's not a real good idea to have more than one predator fish in a smaller pond. My pond is 1 acre and my main predator fish is the LMB but I also have about 15 or20 good adult sized GSF too. So if you think you have to many take a few out every once in a while to keep there numbers in check. They are a fun fish to catch though and fight like crazy when they get bigger.

Great photos Clayton. It is obvious that your wife has impeccable taste in sunfish and should serve as an example to all pond meisters to treat the beloved GSF with dignity, admiration, respect, and on occasion show some affection for them.

Were it not your intention to eradicate GSF from your pond you would be immediately inducted into the GSA. Sadly since you are heck bent on removing our favorite sunfish we must place you on our watch list. It's a shame too since you've grown some nice ones. But GSF are not for everyone and in your pond you must engage in the management practices that you see fit.

For now we will merely observe and record but remember we are watching, we are always watching...

At this point in my post you must use your imagination to visualize the GSA logo which I would normally have inserted here. For some reason (perhaps because this post appears in the "image gallery" ?) I cannot lnik to the GSA logo. I am quite sure that either Rainman or Yolk Sac are somehow involved in this posting limitation.

These days, I'm doing some trapping from my forage pond to add to the bigger ponds. I catch about 50 or so per hour. They include BG, CNBG, RES and GSF with sizes from 1.5 to 4.5 inches. Almost all will be eaten in a short time after stocking. The GSF go back into the forage pond to grow and not get eaten. A big GSF is way too good of a fighter to be cut down early.

Very true. If half these folks caught a one pound GSF on light tackle they'd see the light. Large GSF fight like mad.

i havent seen fight methods discussed much, but my BG typically fight by diving and going in circles, my GSF typically fight w/ a combination of leaping or diving w/ strong headshakes (more like a bass).

I'd have to say -- we have a difficult time distinguishing between a LMB and a GSF upon setting the hook. The GSF fight a lot like bass. I'm amazed at some of the larger bass-sized lures that the GSF go after...When no other Sunfish would touch!!!

I completely agree with you Clayton, I've caught GSF on a 3 inch Rapala X-Rap.

I like Rooster Tails but I also go back to an old favorite, Mepps Aglia Longs. The size #2 and #3 are way too big for most Sunfish but the GSF don't hesitate going for them. I've also caught the GSF on buzzbaits, which really blows my mind!

Could these be HBG not GSF?

"Green sunfish have a moderately compressed body, but are not as deep bodied as bluegill and other sunfish species. They have a large mouth and the upper jaw extends back to the middle of the eye. The pectoral fins are short and rounded. Green sunfish have a dark olive green colored body with iridescent blue lines on their cheek. They also have rows of small iridescent blue speckles on their body. All of the fins, except the pectoral fins, have an orange, yellow, or white outline. They often have a black spot near the back of the dorsal and anal fins where they attach to the body. The opercle (ear flap) is black and sometimes has a thin white to yellow-orange margin."

I can see how the second photo looks like a HBG perhaps in some common color, but all of the other GSF traits are there.. Especially the large mouth!
