I can't imaging that changing the type of diffusers had anything to do with the deaths but perhaps the change in the location of the diffusers and dyeing the pond. To summarize:
You changed:
1. type of diffusers
2. location of diffusers
3. dyed the pond
When did you dye the pond relative to the change in diffusers? (in other words did you dye the pond a week before the diffusers, or the same day?)
