I want to put rocks around the edge of my pond and want to kill the weeds on the banks before I do so. any suggestions on what type of killer to use so it doesnt effect my fish?

Hi Dave,
I had been planning on the same thing. I had intended to put geotextile mesh down first, and figured that would make the weeds a non-issue. Have you considered that approach, or do you have information that suggests it would be a problem?

I had thought about it but I just wanted to kill everything first....I had a pond at another house and I sprayed it with weed killer and then layed rocks and it worked out great! However I didnt have fish in the pond yet so I wasnt overly concerned with runoff into the water. What size rock do you plan on putting down!

I had hoped to put softball size rock and larger down but it may come down to whatever I can find. I'm in farm country so you'd think I'd be able to just load up on the field rock piled up around fields. It seems to be pretty inaccessable unless you get in there in the fall though.
I had put a call in to an area gravel company, and they quoted me $4,000 for the 110 yards of rock I'll need. For that price, I'll walk around and pick rock out of fields myself!

4 grand for rocks-OUCH! I would pick them up also-I also live in farm country and fortunately one of my friends is a farmer and sells his rocks to landscaping people-he said he would get me mine for 1000 so I think I am going that way-rocks are all different sizes but I am alright with that. Are you going to put down weed killer before the mesh or just lay mesh down.

Maybe I'll drive over to your area and get mine too. Let's see...110 yards divided by 1/2 yard per pickup load times $4 a gallon for gas...  My pond was just dug last August, and I had a cover crop planted soon after. I haven't been home to see it since then, but the pictures I've seen look like I may be able to beat the weeds to the punch and just put mesh/rock down while I'm there in June. Personally I wouldn't be concerned about using Round Up or a similar product around the edges of a pond. It breaks down rapidly in contact with organic matter. If you want to play it really safe there are lots of commercial semi-aquatic glyphosates you can order. Shore Clear is one that comes to mind. Herman brothers in the resource guide sells lots of herbicides and other pond products.
For grasses I doubt you'd need to add a surfactant as you do with some surface aquatic plants that have absorption resistant.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I bought a pond safe Glyphosate from Tractor Supply last week. About $50 per gallon.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I vote for using a string trimmer and covering with geotextile then calling a slinger truck.
