Sounds kinda like redears restrict their own harvest.
I've had good success with recommending harvest length maximums. It allows for harvest but protects that lucky sun of a gun who grows big. Maybe you're even protecting some good genetic quality...like luck.
It's also a relatively easy rule to follow. "Keep any that you want under "X" length".
Holding a redear sunfish is like running with scissors.
