I've read that the difference between male and female LMB can be identify by the usually swollen and red "vent" of the female and none swollen and red vent of the male through March to the first of June. Also that a male LMB won't get over 4lb in most ponds and competes with the female that can get much larger. So the male can to be kept no matter what size to help produce trophy size LMB.
