Two years ago(08) I stocked BG and RES and FHM in my new tank in central TX that was only half full. The following Spring(09) I stocked LMB and FHM, again in the tank while only half full. Last fall and winter it finally rained and the tank is full. Should I stock again to the full volume rates? Or not? I am thinking about just putting in Tilapia this weekend. Thoughts?

Thanks

Are there other ponds close by? If so, have they stayed full or does the level bary quite a bit? If they bounce around, you might have too many fish if the level drops again. If it'll stay full, and you don't want to wait the 1-2 years for the fish to reproduce and fill up the space, then I'd stock again, being careful to stock the right sized fish (fingerlings might become expensive fish food for the current residents).

Fish have an amazing way of filling up biomass awfully fast... You may already have more fish than you need in your pond. If it was me, I think I'd not stock anymore fish. But it is really hard to tell.

There are a couple tanks nearby that maintained thier level during the drought...we had just enough rain to maintain, but never enough to fill mine up until recently. What reference could I use to determine what size fish I could stock now? We just want to be able to catch LMB and BG regularly.

How big are these tanks and what stocking rates have you done?

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

How many of each type of fish did you stock?

In most new southern BG/LMB ponds a stocked pond will fill to carrying capacity in 18 mths +-. There is no way to tell exactly without a population analysis. Given the fact that you started with low BG #s my guess is you could add some tilapia.

I would certainly add about 20 or so pounds of tilapia. They take a lot of pressure off the BG base that you will need for the future.

To do it right, you should have stocked about 3,000 BG. Tilapia can take up a lot of slack and cover a lot of mistakes.
