Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Building a dam siphon drain

Friends,
to fill you in, I bought a house on a small 2 acre pond 24 yrs ago. Of course, now the old corregated steel drain (12' riser, 100' under dam, and brush guard) is rusting away. My water level has dropped two feet. Per the "Safe Dams Act" this is a category 1 dam and I get an annual inspection. I think my only feasable option is to install a permenant siphon drain and fill the old drain with concrete. Anyone have some drawing of the kind of siphon drain I need? I'm not looking for just a siphon. It needs to drain and stop draining as the water rises and falls.

Thanks lassig, that is exactly what I need. Close to home too. If anyone out there has any do's and dont's for putting in a siphon drain I am open to all suggestions. Any other options other than filling the old horizontal pipe with concrete?

No problem, pretty easy to unstall also, mine took about 4 hours but I had 2 helpers and a big john deere track hoe to dig the trench.

Thanks guys, Easy Way Plastics looks like a good supplier too. I do have one more concern. I want to be able to drive accross the dam occasionally with my pick up truck. Is this schedule 40 PVC strong enough for that if it is buried say two feet? Should I put something on top of it to spread out the load? Should I bury it three feet at the top? I definately do not want to break my new drain.

When I installed an electric meter at my barn, they required that the wire go through 4" schedule pvc where it passed under the drive. The key to the strength of a round pipe underground, is good pakcing of the dirt around all sides of the pipe.

Pack the dirt at the bottom of the trench if it's not undisturbed soil and the PVC pipe won't sag in that spot when you tamp the soil on top of it.

After mice chewed my PVC encased wire a couple of times, I sealed each end with Great Stuff foam.

I am interested in replacing the old overflow with the siphon system and have been trying to find out the best way to fill in the old barrel.I recently found this web site that not only explains how to do it but also talks about the siphon system.

The article mentions that in cold climates it is possible for the air intake vent to freeze thereby blocking off the air and causing the siphon system to drain the pond.I live in Virginia where it can get really cold and freezing and that may be a problem with the siphon system in my location. has anyone installed the siphon in a cold climate?

I don't think I can get a cocrete truck to my dam. Greg, you have seen it. Its in Holly Springs in Mills Ridge. Thanks to prominance point we are now labeled cat.1. I know they're going to make me fill the old barrel.
Gotta figure out how to get the concrete down there.
