I'm thinking about buying an underwater camera. Looking to get advice, ideas, opinions, experiences from any who has bought one already... What brand, features etc should I look at/for? Thanks

You can make one cheap. Try google. Cabelas sells the unit with everything you need. If your water is not atleast 3' to 4' clarity , probaly never see anything.

i only wanted to have some fun

Had it for 3 years bought it for snapping underwater pics of my youngest son, but use it for ewery thing because its small and handy.
Its guarantied to 10 meter depht and shock proof 1,5 meter.

Check these out, Travis - Sea & Sea

I bought one many years ago when I was doing a lot of diving and still have it. Works great and takes nice pictures. Mine is a film camera (shows how old it is!) but I'm sure that they are now producing some awesome digitals. I swear by mine.

The underwater camera I was thinking about was the kind that can be lowered from a boat with a viewing screen you can look at with the camera on a cord.

CJ,

Stay away from the Chinese knock offs like Harbor Freight sells or are available on Ebay. They typically are yellow in color. I used mine for a maximum of 30 seconds due to accidentally reversing the battery connection. Apparently parts aren't available and it's now just sitting in the box.

If you pay for shipping and a little extra I'd be glad to send it to you to have if you can get it to work. If not you would not be out much.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

CJ, if you already have a camcorder or monitor this might work for you.

Have a look at Canon PowerShot D10.
I've had this camera for over a year and have used it for multiple outdoor activities in a wide variety of conditions - underwater in pools, freshwater lakes, and saltwater snorkeling; as well as cold/icy/snowy conditions while skiing. It has definitely lived up to the "waterproof" claim as I haven't had a single issue with it. The image quality is great. I know this camera has a handful of one-star reviews for people claiming that it leaked on the first use and was irreparably damaged but I've had it underwater dozens of times and haven't had any issues, so my best guess is that a lot of those people didn't make sure all the seals were properly closed before going underwater (although I guess there's some chance that a percentage of the cameras are actually defective and I just got lucky).

A cheap alternative is buy Fuji underwater proof camera throw a way at almost any store. Take the pictures and take it back to the store where it is sent in and the pictures are developed. About $6 bucks.
