From my SCUBA diving days, I remember that red actually fades out to a brownish tone pretty quickly, so beyond a few feet, unless you've got really clear water with plenty of sunlight, red is not going to last long. We did some color experiments during deep water training, but I don't recall offhand what the others were, but all colors tend to lose a bit the deeper you go, other than black and white.
