Scott, the smallest hook size I know of is #28. I am betting those midges in the picture are probably a #26 or #28. I fish that size midge early in the spring, around this time of year as that is often the only hatch coming off. It can be really tough to hook and land a trout on a hook that small as it easily tears out. But if you put on a #24 or bigger, the trout just ignore it. It's amazing how smart brown trout get after being caught a few times. Trying to follow a fly that size on the water is a challenge, even for good eyes! I use 2 pound Maxima Ultra Green tippet when fishing flies that small.
