There's an 8 acre pond ("Lake Peewee") at the local Boy Scout Camp which is similar to what I think you are describing. It's long and fairly thin with a hill on one side and a very long dam placed 50 to 200 yds from a creek on the other. It's a very pretty setting, but it sure makes for a long (and hence expen$ive) dam. Having a dam close to a creek would make me kind of nervous - worrying about meandering taking out the dam - but Lake Peewee is far enough away from this small creek that it's not a big concern.

The GA contingent would have a better feel for watershed size, but the easy 50 acres should probably be enough. I don't think I'd worry about adding the other 15 acres unless it proved necessary.
