I just bought a house on a 10 yr old lake, the portion of the lake I'm on is approx 8-9 acres, about 5:1 length to width ratio. My house is on the shallow end, which has a good flat 4-6 feet and has nice vegetation for fish to spawn in. after that it drops to 12-16 ft with the deepest portions 20-24 ft on the far end. I've got great structure around the edges, but my problem is a total lack of structure in the middle, particularly in the deeper portions of the lake. Also, I'm somewhat limited as to what I can do due to the homeowner's association (grrr).
This weekend I'm undertaking Phase I of the Stealth Structure Enhancement Program, by building a "reef" which will be sunk late one night during Covert Ops I. My reef will be made of 4x4" beams, in the shape of two cubes side-by-side, 4'x4'x8', except the vertical posts will actually be 8' (so I'll have 6 posts sticking up 4' above the cube shapes). Hopefully that isn't too hard to picture. I'm making use of some extra lattice panels that are framed by 1" beams, one will be across the bottom lengthwise (8' section) and two 5' sections will be sideways at the 4' level across the top of each cube. I'm going to tow it out then tie off cinder blocks to the bottom portions to sink it, and have a duck decoy tied off to mark the spot.
Oh, I should probably mention that only my neighbor and I fish in the lake, as did the previous owner.
Phase I-A will involve dumping a rather significant pile of cinder blocks (30 or so) in one spot at the deeper end of the 6' flat just before it drops to 11'.
The population of my lake consists of a large number of crappie (since I'm from South Louisiana I grew up calling them Sac-a-Lait), a very healthy bluegill population, some real large catfish, and a good population of bass (here's the tricky part) of indeterminate size. The guy I bought the house from says he regularly caught 5#+ fish, the biggest being 13#. My neighbor hasn't fished nearly as much but says the biggest he's ever caught was about 4#. I just moved in around the first of the year, so I haven't really had the opportunity to tell much firsthand, but I've either got some really nice bass out there or I don't.
Regardless of which is true, I badly need more structure in the deeper waters, any suggestions as to easily obtained/created things that also have a high stealthiness?
Oh one more thing... the association currently uses a lake management company (Aquascape) so I don't want to sink too much cash into something that they may pull out by accident...
