Next door in Maine, they use a chloride solution before storms on the roads. The worst crap ever, it sticks to your car and windshield. Try to remove it while driving and you'll use a reservoir full of windshield antifreeze, a real hazard to visibility. When the temp drops below 10 degrees it forms a sheet of glare ice on the road surface.
Here in NH we use salt and sand mixed. At least when temps drop below the melt point of the salt you still have the sand for traction. Admitted it's messy, but at least safer.
Last time I was in Mass they didn't allow salt on some roads. I do remember a well off the toll road in New York was contaminated with road salt. The restaurant said they couldn't offer water because of that.
