Well, today I got to the point of needing the joist hangers, so I finally had to dive for them. I didn't measure the temperature, but it was pretty cold.

Did you have any issues with your lumber shrinking? lol

Thanks for the laugh. While I don't want to make fun of your situation, and I do admire the fact that you found the box from your pictures, it's still a very humerous situation. I don't know if I would have gone back to my pics to try to find something or not. Glad that you found it, and appreciative that you shared it with us.

Well, I don't yet have a finished project--thanks partly to a bum knee that has been acting up. But we have made a little progress. With help from my friend, Bill, we finished installing the outside stringers. The pond is about six inches above full pool after another four inches of rain in the last 24 hours.

And this shows a close-up of the attachments of the stringers. The inner stringers are supported by joist hangers, and the outer stringers are supported by angle brackets and structural screws.


We did have a right pretty sunset the other day.


If the knee keeps improving, maybe we can finish the decking next week and then start on the gazebo itself.

We didn't quite get the gazebo done over the holidays, but we did get the pier finished.

Glenn, my son-in-law, helped by putting the deck on the portion between the octagon and the bank while my knee rested. Then, yesterday, I finally put in the last board on the section beyond the octagon. I kind of like it. In fact, I almost prefer it like it is.

That is one very nice pier. How hard is the octagon part to make and install?

The octagon came as a kit of eight wedges with most of the decking pre-installed. The hard part was getting precise placement of the support posts so that two adjacent wedges would sit squarely on the posts. Cutting off the posts also had to be done pretty precisely to keep everything level. Once the wedges were placed on the posts, I aligned them and bolted them together. I think the wedges would be pretty simple to make if you don't want to purchase a kit. You would probably want to build it on a flat concrete pad and then separate the sections for installation.

Dang, can't you just picture yourself sitting on that pier fishing pole in one hand, chilled beverage in another. Beautiful job!

I was looking over this old thread and realized that I never had posted a picture of the finished product. This is how it looked this morning. Glenn, my son-in-law did help me finish the gazebo when he and my daughter were here for Christmas a year later. In truth, he did most of the work while I watched. All in all the project turned out pretty well, and I have indeed spent some time sitting on the bench either fishing or just watching the blugill when the feeder goes off. But the main reward is watching the grandkids fishing, swimming, and just having fun.

Great job! But there's no way I'm showing wife this finished pic. You can bet she would want one.
