I've been doing a lot of "cabin fever" fishing research over the winter here in Minneapolis, and I am getting interested in fishing for rainbows and brooks in some of the DNR stocked metro-area lakes come spring.
I have never fishing for trout in a lake before, only streams. I'll be fishing from shore, as I don't own a boat. My research indicates that trout hit the same stuff in lakes as in streams (garden worms on the bottom, tiny spinners and spoons). I'm planning to buy an ultralight spinning setup during these winter sales, and use it for bluegill/crappie in addition to stocked trout.
My main question, for those with experience trout fishing in stocked lakes, is what rod length I should get and what line I should use. I'm thinking that I should get the longest ultralight I can, probably the 7'6" ultralight fast action
here. My plan is to use this rod to throw 1/8 ounce kastmasters, which should give me great casting distance and allow me to hit deeper water and more offshore structure than other fishermen. The
generic bass pro shops kastmaster knockoffs appeal to me, they're cheap enough that I won't worry about losing some fishing on the bottom. I'm torn between 2# and 4# line. 2# would probably let me cast further and spook the fish less, but I'm not sure if it is strong enough. If there are good braided 4# or 6# lines with 2# diameters that are suitable for this type of fishing, I think that they would be ideal, I could sling spoons and jigs up to 1/4 ounce and really hit deep water once things warm up in June/July to get any last remaining stocked trout. Any other input regarding this situation is greatly appreciated.

-Will a longer ultralight rod help me cast further, and are there any drawbacks to a longer rod?

-Should I consider any braided lines, or just monofilament?
