Is there any effective way to eliminate muskrats? Muskrats have severly damaged my island. I do not want to use leg traps due to dogs that visit my pond.Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks,Al Allison

Body hold traps & floating traps.
Check with your local wildlife officer. He should know a reputable trapper. You can set the rules.

Hi, Al.

If you do search for "muskrat" you will get a fair number of threads with info on shooting and trapping muskrats. One I found was muskrat.

Methods I know of from the Forum are:

1. Leghold traps (your valid concern noted)

2. Conibear 110-type body hold trap (see Cecil's dog's problem with them)

3. Boxtraps (I can't see how a dog could get hurt with these)

4. Shooting (identify your target and lock up the PVC pipe)

If you haven't experienced a boxtrap, it is a wire cage with trap doors on each end, set underwater on a 'rat runway, which traps them inside and drowns them. Seeing as how the entrance is vertical on each end and maybe 4"-5" square, they should be safe wrt dogs.

That's the problem, they make too much love and then there are even more muskrats!

Boxtraps, aka Colony Traps, work pretty well. They are "safe" and can catch multiple rats in one setting. Combined with a .22, you'll get them under control pretty quickly.

i was watching you tube videos last night on trapping. i just set my big conibears for beavers, they are ruining the woods behind my house. while watching i saw a guy catch a muskrat in a pretty neat looking trap. it was floating, mostly wire, and had what looked to be 2 levels (2 stories). looked like it had a 4" piece of pvc coming straight up thru the bottom. he baited with a carrot.

Last I heard he was laid up in Heartbreak Hotel, suffering from a case of "a hunk-a-hunk of burning love".

Sigh. Unrequited lust.

It's just as well. "Burgermeister and Tennille" sounds more like a law firm than a singing act.
