I think you are right about them being older and unmolested... They get old enough, they will get big.

Time and food helps get them big - plus their small offspring being eaten.

YP sometimes feed on zebra mussels too, but it is not an optimum food source for them from what I understand

With all the problems we are having with zebra mussels in Texas lakes, I wonder why Texas Department of Fish and Game hasn't started stocking these critters.
they are becoming a real problem in reservoirs which is costing tax payers millions and the only solution we have are signs at every boat ramp telling us its the law to drain your boats of water.
