Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Selecting a site pond site location (picture)

This is my pond site picture taken from deck, the red line represents where damn will be located, yellow indicates approx water level.I started clearing trees and brush. The damn would be located on the right and would be 15ft high 150ft long.
this is a view from the damn site,it has an arm to left and right alot of the point will come out but it will still have one.

This is an airial view, the red represents the dam the blue the shore line, you can see an existing pond just up the hill from where mine will be, the shore line should come closer to house than I have drawn in. I will post a topo map, and the the DNR report of the soil. any advise will help thanks. I have my new book Perfect Pond Want One. I find it very interesting.

Your watershed looks good based upon the topo map. Should have no problem filling your pond. How is your soil? Do you have clay? You can drain on both sides of your dam. How deep do you want your pond?

thanks for responce, I have 40 acre wated shed, i have 56% clay at 56", according to DNR so does this mean every thing comes out to 56 inches?? I will post the documents i have on the soil.

I'm not a dirt guy Otto or one of the other resident dirt movers will have to comment on the soil make up. However I can help with your question " does this mean every thing comes out to 56 inches??" The answer is no, but you will have to seal the the edges of the pond with good soil down to the 56 inch depth up to pull level. In most cases all of the top soil is removed from the pond bowl but if that bowl is so big it is not economcially feasable it is not all removed assuming you optained the desired pond depth using the natural bowl you dam up. Remember the goal is to store as much water on top of the ground as possible. It's cheaper that way. Looks like a good natural location for a pond assuming the dirt clay content is adequate. Good luck with your project.

My suggestion would be go ahead and build your dam. Lots of watershed. Make sure the sides slope 3-1 so to avoid excess vegetation. Good luck!

Thanks guys I didnt see you guys answered me. I guess it got buiried and i missed your post till now. I have a dozer so I guess I will start taking the dirt out once I get rid of all the trees and bushes, I have a big burn pile already and i just started.
