George, that is exactly what my father did. He was originally was trained as an aerial gunner (I believe for a B25 but don't know for certain), but due to an excess of gunners over airplanes the Navy ended up retraining him to be a radio operator on board a ship. His ship was en route to Japan when the bombs were dropped. He became part of the occupational forces of Japan.

I currently have one nephew in IRAQ and another nephew in basic training.
