I'm not a dirt guy Otto or one of the other resident dirt movers will have to comment on the soil make up. However I can help with your question " does this mean every thing comes out to 56 inches??" The answer is no, but you will have to seal the the edges of the pond with good soil down to the 56 inch depth up to pull level. In most cases all of the top soil is removed from the pond bowl but if that bowl is so big it is not economcially feasable it is not all removed assuming you optained the desired pond depth using the natural bowl you dam up. Remember the goal is to store as much water on top of the ground as possible. It's cheaper that way. Looks like a good natural location for a pond assuming the dirt clay content is adequate.
