There is a good short video about "Disappearing Frogs" on Live Science, which comes up on my computer in Yahoo. I tried to e-mail it to Cecil but it didn't work. The story is about how 30% of the world's amphibians are in trouble for a variety of reasons, but most interesting was the talk of the aquatic fungus that is killing them off. The story takes place in a pond east of San Francisco, where biologists are studying frogs and salamanders.

When I have my federal permit to take out problem herons my frog population explodes on the ponds. Go figure. I have a theory that scientists my be missing something from the equation but could be wrong. That is, back when we used that nasty DDT perhaps predator birds like herons were down but now that we don't they are up? Hence less frogs?
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I'm a little confused and please do not jump on what I say negativly. Ok, so amphibians in some places are not thriving. Good, bad or indifferent. Here we have again a sign of impending doom that We, or rather some blame directly on US,mankind. But nobody mentions the numerous new species found each year. What really matters is the amount of total biomass. Science has determined that the earth is heading towards a pole shift. Though they do not know the when. today, next year or next ten thousand years. Nor do they even know how it will affect life as we know it so ????? Why do people assume all changes are from man and bad ?

Why do people assume all changes are from man and bad ? I don't have a problem with natural extinctions and change is natural on this planet. 99 percent of all the species on this planet have gone extinct and the planet is constantly in a mode of change and repeated cycles. Up until man came into the picture it was adapt or die, but now we are exacerbating this process with our own ingenuity. Our species is capable of an incredible amount of change on this planet in a very short time and it shows. As far as fear of an impending pole shift considering it took 20 million years to produce the last pole shift 800 million years ago during the Precambrian time period, I'm not sure I'll worry about it my lifetime. Be careful what you read. There is a lot of hype out there.

I never see a Horned Toad anymore either. Used to love to catch them when I was kid. No shortage of noisy frogs at the pond. Those "Frogs" over in Ft. Worth are doing pretty good this season.
