Well, a few days ago I found where a groundhog dug under the barn. So, I set a Conibear 220 figuring I'd catch the sucker. Here's what showed up instead.



I didn't think they could move fast, I guess I was wrong. He (she? - I didn't check. ) almost made it thru the trap.

I bet that smell was RIPE. The few skunks I have trapped have not been fun experiences... I am just waiting for my dog to be sprayed. That'll be next!

Just got a new product (for me) as a cover scent for deer hunting. My wife openned the box ouside when delivered by UPS because she thought the bottle of skunk oil must be broken. Nope - it was in a closed glass bottle and in its plastic ouside package. Left it in her jeep so not to bring it in the house and drove it to the barn. The time spent in the jeep apparently imparted it with enough scent to cause the kids to complain for several days about riding in the jeep. Just used it yesterday for the first time. Even though I used latex gloves while transfering some to the scent bomb, my hands stunk and the odor got onto my cell phone from handling it with my bare hands after throwing away the gloves (outside). This is some powerfull stink! I am sure it will cover human scent effectively, but I will handle with great care. This morning I chickened out and used fox urine.

to tell you the truth, the trap worked so quick that it didn't leak a drop. I've caught then in a Conibear 220 before with the same results. I'm constantly surprised with how bad they can smell when they spray, but the critters themselves don't smell at all.

Question for the people that went to PB and saw the skunks up close and personal: I'll bet they didn't smell at all, did they?

If you are careful skinning them out, you can avoid the scent gland.... Theo, your daughter ever try to skin one out yet?

The trap is re-set and waiting for my groundhog to appear.

CJ: If your dog does get sprayed, you know about the Hydrogem Peroxide and Dawn Dish Soap, right?
1/4cup baking Soda
1 tbs. Dawn Dish Soap
Bottle Peroxide
Let Set a few min. and rinse off

Here's one for frying:
DEEP FRIED SKUNK

2 skunks, dressed
Water
1 1/2 c. beer
2 c. oil
1 tbsp. salt
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt

Cut skunk into serving-size pieces; place in pot with salt; add water to cover. Boil for 35 minutes, then skim off the residue that rises to the top. Drain.
Prepare a batter by mixing flour, beer and salt. Dip meat in batter and deep fry until golden brown.

CAUTION: Be certain that the scent glands are removed!

Great with Dandelion Salad

and one for baking:

ROAST SKUNK

1 skunk, scent bag removed
2 sliced carrots
1 c. clear soup
1 tsp. onion juice

Dissolve 1 bouillon cube in 1 cup hot water. Skin, clean, and remove scent bag from skunk. Parboil in salted water 15 minutes. Drain off water. Then place meat in fresh water and steam until tender, about 1 hour. Transfer to roasting pan and put in oven at 375 degrees. Add 1 cup of clear soup, 2 sliced carrots and 1 teaspoon of onion juice and cook uncovered for 2 hours

JHAP. I think Skunk is one of the very few critters that I haven't tried. Looking at the menu, it's not even on the radar.

Quick skunk story. Hope you don't mind. 1971..a senior in high school..never so much as a tardy slip. Worked for a vet and we descented a skunk's gland ..intact. In a small plastic pill vial it went. My mentor, then a 26 year old veterinarian said, "Wouldn't it be funny if you took it to school and released the contents somewhere?" Second floor.. middle of December..stairwell. we, (well wyatt) got closer to the skunk than i would have liked. No they did nto semll at all. It was one of the more memorable moments of PB conf very unique indeed.

My dog got sprayed a few years, we tried all the tricks tomato paste, hydorgen peroxide, after two days ago to be aroudn but for a month he still smlled liek skunk aroudn his mouth and ears. Powerful stuff.

My schedule hasn't yet recovered from PB III, so I've unfortunately had few extra minutes to even check the forum since getting back.

When I finally checked it tonight, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that ESSHUP has stepped in by providing great critter recipes.

catmando, I think we have similar libraries.

I think you and I should stage and host a "critter cookoff" at the next PB conference. I'm sure we could get Sunil to be the chief taste tester, especially if at least one our dishes is made from carp!

That could be done easily! The only thing that I suggest is a blind taste test. Nobody should know what they're eating until everybody is done. That would eliminate any preconceived notions.

Currently there is venison, wild boar and antelope in the freezer. I can get my hands on some elk easily, and with trapping season right around the corner, the possibilities are endless.

Turtle will be available next Spring.

DU, sounds like a fitting start for an Aggie. I'll bet that TAMU heard about it and offered an immediate full scholarship.

They would probably have thrown in some huge stipends had you re-created the incident at UT.

Man my dog got sprayed last week, not even tomatoes can save her! Haha, that's what she gets for chasing the bugger! Any advice for getting rid of the smell?
