I purchased a metal detector for my son's birthday, (my wife asked me if it was really for HIM)We have only been out a few times to a local beach, no treasures yet, just a bunch of recent coins, a few hot wheels and shell casings. I never thought I would be so interested in such a thing, it's neat getting a signal and anticipating what you will find. Our history here in Alberta only goes back about a hundred years, so no relics or ancients. Some of you in the States have much more history, civil war sites and old pioneer sites would be interesting to search.
Just wondering if anyone here has a metal detector?

James, I bought a Garret about 5 years ago and have used it maybe 10 times. I've found some shell casings, some "what the heck is that junk" and some old square nails. But, I've never had any really interesting finds.

I did put it to use last year when I dumped a bunch of sharp screws in the gravel driveway.

JWHAP bought a metal detector the year after we bought our property. She walked all around the pond with it. She found a bottle cap and an old lure. Given that our property is in gold country I was hoping she would find a nice nugget or two. No such luck.

Hello All. Yes , I detect and have done for many years. Detecting is like land fishing. Your have to learn the lake to find the fish. Detecting is alot like finding the right place to build your pond it's very much about5 real estate. Location,location,location.
Those whom do their research do very well. But detecting is not all as easy as you may think as they show on tv.

Currently only in the logs I mill. $20 blades add up pretty quick. I would love to get a real one since our pond was a stop for old steam engines to refill with water from the 1890's to the final steam engine days. Found some track buried in leaves with my toe, if that counts.
