Yesterday, I got a call from a friend of mine in the fisheries business who has some huge blue cat he must part company with. He's raised them for years and his kids are grown now and the fish are just taking up space and no on is enjoying them. He said they weigh from 50-80 pounds (That's right FIFTY to EIGHTY pounds) each and he wants $3 per pound for them. If I had a large enough pond, I would buy them myself.
Anyone interested?
They are in Texas, by the way.

Wow, having a few of those in a 1/4 acre would make for a hefty feed bill!

They would transport to Nebraska, but I would want to know how they would weather the colder climate. Blue cat are susceptible to ich during cool weather.

Actually I'm a little surprised. Is that ich from transport, or just a general rule of cold weather existence for these behemoths?
The Nebraska state record is over 100 lbs.

You boys.....
Ich, in blue catfish, is triggered by rapid rises and falls of water temperature. They do fine in the wild, where there's bigger water that doesn't change temps so fast.
I'm not suggesting you not bring them to Nebraska. I'm suggesting due diligence in deciding. No sense paying $240 for a fish, plus transport, if you see a massive body floating later this fall.
Transport can sure be an issue...but professional haulers are good at what they do.

Bob I got to thinking about what you said about a large enough pond. How large of a pond does something like that need and how did they raise them to be so large? ARe they in a big lake now?

I believe the Maryland state record is only 65 pounds... You could buy the 80 pounder and brag that you have a state record fish in your pond!

Please don't take this the wrong way but I would be concerned with bringing the ich parasite (protozoan) to my waters.

I posted a similar article a while back. But, here is another about what the big blue cats are doing in Virginia, literally in CJBS's back yard. Blue catfish now the top predator in James River Hopefully this forum link will continue to work, as it has a some more good info: Blue Cats on the James
