Gallop may not be an engineer, but I'm thinking he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!
How about adding a simple heavy-ish weight of some sort inside your PVC tube? Something that just sits on top of the food and would have sufficient mass to push the wet clump down on a continual basis. Even if you just add more length to your PVC so you have more food weight pushing down, you're still going to run into the same problem as the food supply diminishes.
