I have made a demand feeder out of pvc after reading about it in another post. That post talked about capping off the pvc and drilling half inch holes in it and attaching to a dock post and filling with food and they will eat the food out of the holes as it softens. I don't have a dock so I took a metal fence post and drove it into the pond bottom and secured my pvc to it with bungees. I have holes drilled in it for about the bottom 1.5 feet where it is underwater. The fish do eat all the food that initially makes its way down to the bottom of the tube. The problem I'm having is that the food gums up right at the water level and gets stuck and the rest of the food does not make its way down to the bottom to be eaten. Does anyone have any experience with this and have a solution or is my solution to submerse much more of the pvc and drill many more holes? Thanks!

I think it would be to submerse it more.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Not sure of your design, but if you increase the force pushing the food down this would solve the issue. you could do this by increasing the weight of the dry food pushing down (ie more pvc length out of the water) I would add more length and therefore increase the force pushing down. I would also increase diameter of pvc to increase the flow and decrease "friction" issues.

Gallop may not be an engineer, but I'm thinking he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!
How about adding a simple heavy-ish weight of some sort inside your PVC tube? Something that just sits on top of the food and would have sufficient mass to push the wet clump down on a continual basis. Even if you just add more length to your PVC so you have more food weight pushing down, you're still going to run into the same problem as the food supply diminishes.

Just make sure the weight is made of something that wont rust or limit its travel so it doesn't enter the water

Good point about limiting its travel - maybe just tie a string to it. What about even something like a sandbag, or a sack of gravel?
