is this a common sunny or blue gill?

Bluegill, northern (common) strain.

I would have to guess bluegill also, but does the gill-tab tell us anything?

No. I really don't know. It just struck me as odd looking.

I'm not a bluegill-hugger like some of you nuts here.

Paging experts, inquiring minds want to know.( Walt I'm not suggesting your wrong).

I'm thinking BG x longear. None of the BG that I've caught here up to the Yooper border in Wi had "ears" that long.

I get Bluegills sometimes on My Local Lake that have similar Ear Tab characteristics. -



I fish quite a bit, and have pretty good knowledge of Fish ID - and I've never caught a Longear Sunfish in NY. I've read they are sometimes found here - more toward the Hudson, but I've yet to see one -

The eartab is unusual - didn't notice that the first time. Longear are mainly a stream/river fish so if it came from a pond it would be less likely to be one of those, though it's certainly not impossible. All other characteristics, i.e. body and face color, body shape, etc. are a common-strain bluegill's.

Also, I'm proud to be a bluegill hugger. If I ever catch that two-pounder I may even pull a Bill Dance and smooch him.

Ditto. IMHO the ear tab position is just a genetic anomaly. Kind of like some brook trout I once had with spots arranged in pairs.

I'm going with standard bluegill....but the eartab is messed up a little bit. I'd guess that it's nothing more than a morphological anomoly.

Not pure BG. Look at the fins. BG = Pectoral fin elongate and poined , LES = Pectoral fin rounded and Black opercular spot with a pale edge

Gill plate up turned in LES & RBS. Some color like a RBS hybrid also.

In my opinion, there's nothing about the coloration of this fish to suggest anything other than pure bluegill.

I believe if there's some longear genetics contributing to the upsweep in the eartab, it's considerably less than 50%.

What about the fins - does that = 33% more ?

I think the family in Bruce's pic has some bluegill genes in it. Or at the least something down the chain somewhat from homo erectus.
