 Photo courtesy of DEC The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today that Glenn Collacuro, of Mahopac, has broken a state record by landing a 7-pound, 6 ounce, 22-inch brown bullhead while fishing Lake Mahopac in Putnam County on Aug. 1. Caught with a sawbelly, or alewife, Collacuro's catch surpassed the old record for largest bullhead (also caught at Lake Mahopac) by more than a pound and marks the fourth state record fish species to be broken this year. Brown bullheads average about one to two pounds in New York State - making Collacuro's catch even more impressive. Inhabiting most of the state, bullheads are most active during low light periods and are highly sought after because they provide a tasty meal, according to a DEC press release. I don't think I'd be eating this ol' boy.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I wouldn't eat it either. I would promptly send it to Ligonier Indiana.

I wouldn't eat it either. I would promptly send it to Ligonier Indiana. No toxic waste sites here.  Seriously it would make a cool mount. I'd have to cast the head and fins though. Those parts are too greasy.

I've only tasted bullheads of normal size, but when I get a 7 pounder I'll let you know.

Dang! That thing is huge... I think the biggest brown bullhead I ever caught was around 18" and 4 pounds and I thought mine was big! I think flavor has a lot to do with where they come from. Anyone know the water quality of Lake Mahopac? IME, brown bullheads don't do nearly as well in competition with CC. I bet that lake probably doesn't have them. Most New England lakes don't.
