Here's another question that's not related to ponds but that I figure someone on here has probably had some experience with.

I'm shopping around for some kind of alarm system for the entrance to our property. We have no gate, just an open driveway with fence posts on either side. Our house is around 600' from the driveway entrance. I'm thinking of some kind of system that's powered by a battery or possibly a solar panel. When a car drives through the entrance it would transmit a radio signal to one or more receiver units in the house that would beep to alert us that someone was entering the property. I'd like to have multiple receiver units in the house so that we can hear the alert from different rooms. Hopefully it could be adjusted to only trigger on cars or trucks and not give us false alarms when an animal walks through.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Any recommendations on where to start looking for it?

They do make something like this although I don't have one. At my house, we are about 300' from the road and I was going to have some stone pillars put up flanking the driveway at the road. The masonary guy suggested I do that alarm thing to know when someone is coming up the road.

I haven't contracted the project yet, but it would have come in handy last week when a brazen Jehovah's Witness drove up my driveway and came to the door. It would have given me enough time to answer the door with a H&K .40 in my hand so I could counsel said witness to the error of his ways.

My dad has the Mier Products Inc Model DA-600.

He likes it and says it doesn't trigger for deer and dogs. Plus it will turn lights on when hooked into a power outlet with a light plugged into it through a wireless connect. There are lots of options out there...

Just type in driveway alarms into a search engine and I am sure multiple options will come up. If I ever end up in a secluded residence with a long driveway, I'll get one myself...

We use a receiver unit with three remote detector/transmitters. They will transmit at least 500 or so feet, which is the distance the 2 most remote are from the house. IIRC the receiver will handle up to 6 transmitters, you can program in a unique voice message for each one to play when it is set off. The transmitters are battery powered and play the "low battery" message when they start getting weak.

We used two different one channel systems before this one, and the six channel seems to be more robust than either of them were. I will see what make/model it is later today and post that info.

All three systems have some failures to detect in heavy rain and will throw a lot of false hits when a spider spins a web in front of them. We call the false hits "ghost cars."
