Smaller black bears, say under 150 pounds are rather agile in trees... Even bears in the 300 pound range are very nimble in trees.

I had a bear do the same thing 3 years ago, I had a line from the cabin to a tree with 2 bird feeders on it, the bears were coming around so I hung a drop light on the rope so I could watch the feeders. About 2:30 in the morning I woke up with the light flashing from him shaking the rope, then I heard a zipping sound, and by the time I got to the window I saw him on the ground with the bird feeder in his mouth, then he took off with his prize. Apparently he slid along the rope, grabbed the feeder and dropped.

I've given up on feeding the birds by our cabin in PA. The bears either figure out a way to eat the food or just destroy everything trying to eat it...

Cj, I have a 12 ft. steel pipe T in the ground with 2 bird feeders, I have to use a step ladder to refill them but the bears can't get them, although they've tried to push it over.

�Well, you see, Norm, it�s like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it�s the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.

AP, I give you an A for effort. When the refilling of feeders became that difficult that is when I said the heck with it. The bears could be defeated but it just became too big a hassle. I was much happier 10 years ago when bears were far less common than they are now...

My boys and I spooked this mom and cubs when we were hiking in the spring. I didn't even see them until we were very close, they made it into the trees very quickly. They also made their descent very quickly. We didn't stay long.

The new fish feeder was put on the tripod yesterday and the bottom is 18 inches above the water. The only modification I made was to put a 6" dia. piece of stovepipe in the center of the feed bucket and add feed only in the stove pipe so that the feed level will be reduced quicker hopefully avoiding any clogging from feed sitting too long. There's enough feed in the pipe to last atleast a week at the rate I'm feeding. If I have any problems with the feeder I'll post it.  The new feeder is still working great, no problem clogging, even with all the wet weather. Here's what the inside looks like with the piece of stovepipe.

Cecil, If that tripod was made for the military it would run about 5 grand instead of 40 bucks. You sure got that right!
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

AP, I guess I missed it. What is the stove pipe for? In the winter when it gets cold you light the pellets for a hand warmer.

Ric, the stove pipe reduced the amount of pellets in the bucket thus allowing the feed to move vertically with more velocity and reducing the combined coefficient of friction with less coagulation.

Cecil,that sounds like that bear I saw on a beer or water commercial a few years ago. The bear charged a guy that just caught a salmon and tried to take it away. Anyway they both got into a fight over the fish. Hilarious commercial if you ever see it.
