I had a bear do the same thing 3 years ago, I had a line from the cabin to a tree with 2 bird feeders on it, the bears were coming around so I hung a drop light on the rope so I could watch the feeders. About 2:30 in the morning I woke up with the light flashing from him shaking the rope, then I heard a zipping sound, and by the time I got to the window I saw him on the ground with the bird feeder in his mouth, then he took off with his prize.
Apparently he slid along the rope, grabbed the feeder and dropped.
