Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Types of fish to choose UH OH! Goldfish

I am a little concerned about my goldfish population, I threw in a dozen last year and now I have a bunch. I watched the large 9" fish slowly disappear through predators and I knew I had a small school of say 200 but tonight I stayed way after dark and walked the bank with my day lighter spot light and they were all along the shore say 2" long avg 1-2 every couple feet or so. I didnt walk the whole pond but enough to know that I think I should do something. I dont have any predators in the pond yet other than 15-18 cc that are 14" long. Would rounding up a couple 1lb bass from neighboring ponds help or totally throw things out further? Remembering that I have a depleted number of RES and HBG that are around 5-7" right now

That may be the best thing to do with the situation right now.

I'd want to get something more aggressive than CC in there to control the goldfish. Smallish bass, say 8"-10", would be able to eat the GF YOY OK, without touching the RES or HBG adults.

Anything big enough to eat the 9" adult GF would be capable of denting your sunfish population, so I think I'd target the big GF with angling.

I don't remember the specifics on your pond; do you want to avoid a breeding population of LMB? If so, single sex LMB (hard to DIY except during the spawn, IMO) or HSB might be the ticket. For HSB, I'd want 10"-12" due to the smaller mouth size.

My orginal idea was to have the HBG, RES with a few CC then once forage is strong stock some sort of bass this fall. Idea being a put take type pond that has chidren fishing fun, that would require very little of my limited knowledge to maintain, but! who would of thunk that a dozen bait goldfish would turn into a problem, At the time I didnt think anything would live in my almost septic pond. I like the idea of a different bass other than LMB but I do enjoy them also. I have had the bug to start throwing in alot more fish just so I dont have to wait so long for the surface of the water to break.

The cc will eat the goldfish.

If you want a bunch of big fat cats, just leave them alone in the pond with the goldfish.

They might not control the population satisfactorily but the goldfish will provide them with food.
