There is very little written material (studies) on CNBG. I have seen none on F-1 BG and in fact never seen them referred to as that. If they exist ( and I think they do) then they do so in 2 of our ponds which have had both types stocked for at least 8 years. I have never seen one that I could tell was an F-1 or Fx. I would assume that they are intermediate between BG and CNBG but as to what genetic traits I don't know. It would be shear speculation on my part.

Walt were you aware that a least 1 state level manual ( by a PhD fisheries scientist) says don't stock just F-1 LMB in southern ponds because of the risk of genetic outbreeding depression? I don't agree based on studies I have read but we don't stock just F-1s because of the unknown potential. That's interesting and good to know, Eric. I knew that it's common for pond owners who stock F-1s to also stock Floridas and some northern-strain, so perhaps I was off in suggesting he stock only F-1s. I would think it would behoove him to stock some of them, though, as I know of a lake near my hometown that has them, and though I have not been fortunate enough to fish it personally, a friend has twice, and both times has caught a bass over six pounds; and an eleven-pounder came out of there recently, and a friend of my friend's swears he lost a bass right at the boat that would go in the mid-teens...Could be a fish story, but considering the lake recently produced an eleven-pounder...

You're just emphasizing the importance of stocking northern-strain and/or Floridas with them, is that right? In any case, thanks for the correction - certainly makes sense.

Walt, you are correct that the pond is pristine. Well, there are maybe 6-8 gsf in there that were trapped when we built the dam backing up the spring stream, but by and large, no fish. I think the F1 strain and the coppernose will be my choice. Nice suggestion. Now if we can arrange for Greg to get us some fishe will be all set! Greg, let me know what you have available. Walt, are you wanting to purchase some fish as well? Maybe one trip will be to everyone's advantage.

Yes, Jimmy, I'm getting some fish from Greg, two orders to be exact (one for a client and one for myself). One trip would be awesome.

Walt as always I am emphasizing informed choices based on as much info as is available. That way the pond owner can choose as he/she wishes. What to stock depends on many factors including location and is goal based. Hopefully if we all provide the info wise choices can be made. If someone with the info chooses to go way outside the box that is ok as its their pond.

I know plenty of people who have just F-1s and plenty who have mixed populations and some just Flas. An examination of the thread would show that I don't agree with the F-1 warning but acknowledge the possibility that it may have some merit. We are in the integrate zone ( where Northerns , Flas and F-1s and Fxs all exist )so we are matching our genetics to that and started long before the warning.

well, after reading many other threads( which I should have done already!) I measured my pond and find out I actually have about 1/5 acre instead of 1/3. WIll have to adjust fish amounts accordingly.

Greg, I will probably wait until the weather cools off a bit, probably late Sept, based on the recommendations of Matt. If you happen to be coming thru the area anytime prior to that I would be happy to get delivery of the fish though. jim
