i don't think i'm reading the label right but for fila algae my cutrine bottle looks like it says 1.8-7.2gallons per surface acre..... first off that's a big swing, what do you do, guess? and secondly that seems like way to much. i've never applied the stuff but i must be reading it wrong right? my pond is 1/8th acre....50x100.

I too was pretty confused. My pond is 15 acres, so how are you supposed to figure out how many acres you are covering in a boat?
A local aquaculturist told me to mix it 3 parts water to one part cutrine and spray. The stuff is blue and seems to settle on the algae if there is some water on top of it. This system worked well for me.

yeah the bottles example is 9parts water to 1 part cutrine plus but the total ammount to use is still a mystery to me.

OK, I'll join the confused list too. My pond is about 1/5 acre. I read that for planktonic algae, .6 gallon per acre. My calculations figured out at about 15 ounces of Cutrine plus. I mixed that with about 135 ounces of water. Due to amount of algae, I split that in half to reduce the shock to the pond. I sprayed it on Saturday morning and by the afternoon, I could see a color change and a little clearing on that half of the pond. By today, the algae is completely back again. My question is, 1/5 acre is a surface measurement. Do I need to multiply that by average depth and use Cutrine according to that measurement? If that is the case, 1/5 times avg, 6 feet deep, 1.16 acres, which would be .6 gallon.

Here is what works for me. I have a half acre pond. In my 5 gallon sprayer put a half gallon of cutrine plus and fill the rest with water. I go along the bank and spray from the shore to 3-4 feet out. I cover have of the pond with the 5 gallons. I wait a day or two then do the same on the other half of the pond. Then after six weeks or so need to repeat the process.

So based on the chart on the bottle, you are basically treating your pond to the 4 foot depth. 2.4 gallon per acre for 4 feet. You have a 1/2 acre and are spraying 1/2 gallon per half of the pond or 1 gallon for the entire pond.

The part that isn't clear is how are they determining the depth. Is this the depth of the algae growth, or is this an average depth of the pond. How can you determine how deep algae is growing?

I was all concerned about this when I first started using Cutrine but then got sick of trying to figure it out and decided to do "whatever". Usually I'll mix it with 3-4 gallons of water, sometimes just 1 gallon of water, absolutely no ill effects. I have a little over 1 acre, average depth is probably around 4 ft.

The visibility in my pond is never more than three feet so I don't worry about what grows where I can't see.
