WOW! I think alligator gar are one of the most amazing fish around. My list of things to do before I die include catching an alligator gar on rod and reel.

That is one large fish! The head really does look like an alligator. I wouldn't want to be a carp swimming anywhere near that thing! Makes you wonder what they eat? Maybe help thin out all the new Asian carp species that are taking over the Mississippi...

It is my understanding that some of the best ways to fish for them are fish carcass, dough balls, and just a mesh of fishing line dipped in stink bait or dough so the mesh of line gets stuck in the teeth. They also sun just under the surface of the water.

I'll bet that thing could come at you faster than an alligator (unless on land and good luck getting there). Any estimate on how old it is? What a monster!!!

The picture sure does say something about evolution.

I would guess that exactly where the fins are on this beast is where the legs of a real alligator or crocodile would be.

At least the guy in the picture looks happy to have caught it. Herman brothers please take note.

Caught a 60# in a sein net fishing for specks in the surf at Cameron, La. Nasty dudes. Make great garfish balls. I think it was the world record rod n reel Al gar was caught a few years back where the Sabine river dumps into Sabine Lake on the Tx/La. border. 220#. A 2 pound hardhead catfish was used for bait. This is a worthless saltwater cat that has fins everywhere it seems.
