Europeans definitely are crazy about carp. Most of us here wish they'd have stayed back in the old country (the carp, not the Europeans).
A while back I ran across a DVD on "Bream Fishing". I played it, thinking I would see how others catch bream. Did I ever get a hilaroious surprise! The DVD was produced in Britan. The host pronounced "bream" to rhyme with "cream". He used smelly dough balls to chum the fish, and maggots for bait. He used a (I kid you not!) ~30' pole, and when he hooked a fish, he landed it by feeding the pole in longitudinally instead of raising the tip. Finally, the "bream" although a handsome fish, appeared to be in the carp family. The host seemed to be a little put off when he caught one that fought well. He almost seemed apologetic about them "whizzing around". I almost cracked a rib!
But,,, I'm sure he would find our fish and fishing techniques just as odd. Some people in my area actually eat carp, but they admit it's far from being their favorite.
