I tried bottle rockets and the modern (weak) M80s. The geese just looked at me... "Is that all you've got?".

A couple of 12 ga shots across the pond cleared them out post-haste though. I didnt shoot at them, just near. They hardly come around much anymore, and don't stay long if they do.

Have you considered a paint gun? Stings like the begeezus but would be non-leathal unless you wanted it to be...

Do the geese stay on your pond at night? I've seen a flashing deterrent that is supposed to work if they do, but don't know how well it works during the day.

I have been trying to get my big brother Dwight in tune to one of these. So far he has not been very receptive. Perhaps a bit unerving at first but I am sure Gail, Buck, Tan, and he could get used to it. Propane Cannon = No Geese

They don't stay there at night. I looked at the flashing light, but I agree that it probably wouldn't work during the day. It is supposed to disrupt sleeping. Only my students sleep during the day!

The cannon would be wonderful. I would have a blast (pun fully intended). But I think the horse owners would kill me.

The other morning, we had a goose on our roof and two on the ground honking at each other, like a love triangle gone horribly wrong.

Hate those things.

I can't believe that Dwight doesn't have one of those cannons.

If he wanted one, he could build one three times better than the nicest commercially available model.

It isn't like the geese are native to where they are nesting. They're just introduced "golf course" geese. They're almost as bad as mute swans...

I love geese... in your pond.

I have 4 black-bellied whistling ducks that visit, and they're beautiful. They're very goose-like, but I haven't noticed any bad habits so far.

For all you birders out there, how do you tell the difference between the drake and hen black-bellied whistling ducks ?

My friend down in Texas has 6 on his pond for a few years, although they've never had little ones. His Woodies are successful.

Every time I read the bag limits for waterfowl each September, they always allow you one whistling tree duck. I don't think they make it as far north as VA though, so I don't worry about them. I have never seen one in person.

An update on my geese. The family no longer comes around. I think they didn't like all of the rocks that were flying in their direction. there was still three stubborn geese that come back every day, but take off as soon as I pull up in my truck. Two days ago I put out Odie the Coyote and the geese did not come back yesterday. I will see if Odie continues to trick them.

Coach, glad it works, is that the one that swivels in the wind, or is it stationary?

It is the four legged one made by flambeau. I don't have grass around the pond yet, so I didn't want the legless one. It freaked my mother-in-law out, so I guess it looks pretty real when you first glance at it. Another two days with no geese!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the one with the nice breast.

My coyote worked well, but just had a mated pair with five little babies wander into the pond. My wife and I tried everything to get them off the water, but they would not leave. My dog was doing laps back and forth chasing them while I threw rocks to no avail. We did this for an hour. We finally gave up. I think we convinced them that it was a bad place to raise a family. They have not been back (two days).

I believe I have three families of geese that stay 24/7. Then in the afternoon there could be as many as 100. We trap shoot in their general direction and they don't seem to even notice. They don't bother me too much, but they certainly do fertilize everything.

Sept 1 is the opening of the early resident goose season here in VA. A quick way to let them know they are not welcome!
